Rob Corbet

Dr Gaythwaite is now a part-time consultant to Hale and Dorr. His particular professional interests are biotechnology, computer software, copyright and patent and know-how licensing.

He is a fluent French speaker and has done much work in France and for French clients and, in particular, has been involved in multi-country patent litigation. He is a lapsed chemist having obtained his first degree from Glasgow University. He then did a PhD at Cambridge before deciding to work in intellectual property.
He now splits his time between his house in London and his retreat in the southwest of France.

John Benassi is a partner with Paul, Hastings, Janofsky & Walker LLP, is co-head of their worldwide IP group and is listed in the peer review publication The Best Lawyers in America (1992-1993). He has extensive litigation experience including in criminal jury trials. In patents, he represented generic drug manufacturer Gensia Sicor in the invalidation of Bristol Myers’ Cisplatin chemotherapy patent which was used to cure Lance Armstrong’s cancer. In the areas of copyright, software and the internet, he was counsel to Streamcast Communications (Morpheus) in the successful “next Napster case” against the music and entertainment industry which involved alleged peer-to-peer copying. In the trademark area, he has successfully litigated a number of cases including against Microsoft preliminarily invalidating the “Windows” mark as being generic. In addition to litigation, Mr Benassi has been involved in securing patents, trademarks and copyrights in a variety of different technological areas. He is a co-author of Patent Litigation published by the Practicing Law Institute (PLI) in 2002-3. He has lectured and/or written on “Trade Secrets”, “Commercialising Intellectual Property”, “Trademark Litigation and “Trial Tactics” (1995-2003). Mr Benassi received a technical undergraduate degree from the University of Illinois (1971) and his JD, cum laude, from George Washington University (1974) and clerked for the US Claims Court.
